Peas

Peas are a pulse crop, a category of legumes that are high in protein. Canada is the world’s largest producer and exporter of peas.  Larger acreages of green and yellow peas are relatively new to Prince Edward Island, but the number of peas grown in PEI is increasing each year.  Peas are generally planted in May and harvested in August and early September. Peas that are produced in Canada are used globally as ingredients in food products, livestock feed, pet food, aquaculture food, or to be processed to be made into flour, starches, proteins, and fibres. There is a pea processing plant in Slemon Park (W.A. Grains) that processes and exports thousands of tons of Island peas each year.
